MAYOR'S CUP CHAMPIONS

For those who were not able to make it to the game, you missed what can only be described as an instant classic. Thurston Foods (9-9) squared off against Wallingford Little League Majors Champions PBA (19-0). To defeat an undefeated team, it takes a near perfect game both on the offensive and defensive side of the field, and a ton of confidence. After shutting down Thurston Foods in the first, PBA took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on some costly plays in the field. Things could have easily taken a turn for the worst, but the boys from Yalesville buckled down and matched PBA with two of their own. An inning later, Thurstons took their first lead of the game 3-2, but PBA came out and matched them at 3-3. The next three innings featured scoreless play and excellent defense that saw Yalesville get out of both a bases loaded jam with no outs, and an inning with the winning runners on 2nd and 3rd. In extra innings, Yalesville struck first in the seventh to go up 4-3 in the top half of the inning, but again Wallingford matched them to end the seventh 4-4. Finally, after not giving in an inch all day, Thurston Foods scored two runs to make it 6-4, before a grand slam added insurance runs to enter the bottom of the eighth 10-4. The undefeated PBA team would not go away quietly, and began their comeback cutting the lead to 10-6, before an amazing outfield throw to the plate getting the runner going home, and subsequent cut off of the second runner trying for third in crucial double play. While players stepped up in big spots on both offense and defense, this was again a complete team victory, which has been the story of the season for the Majors Champions. Congratulations to both teams on an amazing game, and to Thurston Foods on winning the 2019 Mayor’s Cup Trophy!
